Inspiring the next generation: A glimpse into a career in civil construction

Robson Civil Projects recently had the pleasure of welcoming a group of young men from the Clontarf Foundation for a work experience day designed to provide a firsthand look at the diverse career opportunities available within civil construction.

The Clontarf Foundation works to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men. Through its academies and activities, the Foundation supports young men to engage with education, complete Year 12 and transition into meaningful employment.

For Robson, the day was an opportunity to support this important work by sharing our industry, our projects and the many different pathways that can lead to a rewarding career in civil construction.

Starting behind the scenes

The day began at Robson’s Head Office in Somersby, where General Manager Greg Ferguson and Central Coast Divisional Manager Daniel Bosley welcomed the group and provided an introduction to Robson Civil Projects.

Greg and Daniel spoke about what we do, the types of projects we deliver and their respective roles within the business, while giving the young men an insight into the range of career pathways available across the civil construction industry.

From there, Maintenance Supervisor Wayne Burke took the group on a tour of Robson’s maintenance workshop. It provided another perspective on the industry and an opportunity to see some of the important work that happens behind the scenes to support our projects and operations.

From the workshop to the worksite

The group then jumped on the bus and headed to our Sophia Waters project at Chisholm to experience civil construction in action.

Project Manager Jack Chillingworth led the young men around the site, explaining the various moving parts involved in delivering a large subdivision and providing an overview of the bulk earthworks and civil construction components underway at Sophia Waters.

Importantly, the visit allowed the group to see that a career in civil construction can take many different forms. From working with plant and equipment and maintaining machinery through to site-based roles and project management, there are many pathways for young people with different interests and strengths.

Building opportunities for the future

For the Robson team, it was a great opportunity to step away from the day-to-day and share some of the knowledge and experience that exists across our business.

We hope the day gave the young men a better understanding of civil construction and, perhaps, sparked an interest in an industry that offers the opportunity to build a rewarding career while contributing to the infrastructure our communities rely on.

A big thank you to the Clontarf Foundation for collaborating with us and giving Robson the opportunity to be part of the experience.

Proudly Building Tomorrow isn’t just about the infrastructure we deliver. It’s also about sharing our knowledge, creating opportunities and encouraging the next generation who may one day help build it.
